When the Nervous System Feels Stuck in “On”

Bottle of Neroli oil and orange blossomsThere are moments when the body simply refuses to settle.

Your mind may be ready for rest, but your nervous system still feels alert, tense, or restless.
Many people describe it as feeling “wired but tired.”

This experience is increasingly common today because the nervous system is continuously responding to signals from the environment — light exposure, emotional stress, sleep disruption, and even subtle chemical cues in the air.

One fascinating discovery in modern physiology is how quickly the nervous system can respond to scent.

Certain aromatic molecules appear to communicate directly with areas of the brain involved in emotion, hormone regulation, and stress response.

One of the most remarkable oils studied for this effect is neroli essential oil.

What Is Neroli Oil?

Neroli essential oil is distilled from the delicate blossoms of the bitter orange tree (Citrus aurantium).  These small white flowers are harvested in early spring and must be distilled quickly to preserve their fragile aromatic compounds.

Neroli has been treasured for centuries for its elegant fragrance, but its effects go far beyond aroma.

The oil contains naturally occurring compounds such as:
Linalool
Limonene
Nerol
Alpha-terpineol

These molecules are known to interact with the olfactory system, which has direct connections to the limbic brain — the region responsible for emotional processing, memory, and autonomic nervous system regulation.

This direct pathway helps explain why scent can influence mood and physiology almost instantly.

The Nervous System Connection

The nervous system is designed to constantly scan for signals that indicate either safety or threat.

When the brain perceives safety, the parasympathetic nervous system becomes more active.  Heart rate slows, digestion improves, and the body shifts into repair and restoration.

When the brain perceives threat or stress, the sympathetic nervous system activates.  This is the familiar “fight or flight” response.

For many people today, this stress response stays partially activated for long periods of time.

This is where certain aromatic compounds appear to have a unique influence.

Research suggests that inhalation of neroli oil may help support:
• calming of the nervous system
• improved emotional balance
• reduced stress hormone activity
• improved cardiovascular regulation

What Research Shows About Neroli Oil

Several clinical studies have explored how neroli oil affects physiological stress markers.

In controlled trials involving inhalation of neroli essential oil, participants showed:
Reduced blood pressure levels
Lower cortisol (stress hormone) levels
Improved mood and relaxation scores

One notable study involving postmenopausal women found that inhaling neroli oil twice daily for five days resulted in measurable improvements in:
• quality of life scores
• sexual desire
• estrogen levels
• blood pressure regulation

Researchers concluded that neroli may support both endocrine balance and stress resilience, likely through its interaction with the limbic nervous system.  This is an important insight because the nervous system and hormone system are deeply connected.

When stress signaling remains elevated for long periods, hormonal rhythms often begin to shift as well.

Why This Matters for Modern Stress

Many wellness conversations focus on trying to “fix” symptoms.  But the nervous system often tells a deeper story.

The body is constantly adapting to the signals it receives.

When the nervous system experiences ongoing signals of urgency or threat, the body may respond with:
• disrupted sleep
• elevated cortisol
• blood pressure changes
• mood shifts
• hormone fluctuations

Supporting the nervous system’s perception of safety and calm can sometimes help shift these patterns.

Aromatic compounds like those found in neroli oil appear to provide one gentle signal that encourages this shift.

Simple Ways to Use Neroli Oil

Neroli’s calming profile makes it especially helpful during moments when the nervous system needs encouragement to settle.

Many people enjoy using neroli in simple daily routines such as:
Evening diffuser blend
Diffuse 2–3 drops of neroli in the evening to create a calming environment before bedtime.

Stress reset breathing
Place one drop on the palms, rub together, and inhale slowly while taking several deep breaths.

Nervous system support
Apply diluted neroli over the heart or along the back of the neck to support relaxation during stressful moments.

Because neroli is both calming and emotionally uplifting, it can be especially comforting during times of emotional tension or transition.

A Small Signal That the Body Understands

The body is constantly interpreting signals from its environment.

Light, sound, scent, rhythm, and emotional cues all contribute to how the nervous system decides whether to remain on alert or move toward restoration.

Neroli oil offers a simple but powerful reminder that sometimes the most effective support comes from working with the body’s natural communication systems rather than against them.

A gentle aroma can become a small signal that encourages the nervous system to soften, breathe more deeply, and return to a calmer rhythm.  And sometimes, that shift is exactly where healing begins.

My Story

For decades, I lived and worked in a high-stress environment as a court reporter, balancing demanding 80-hour workweeks while raising my son as a single mother.

From the outside, I was strong and capable. But internally, the chronic pressure was quietly reshaping my body in ways I didn’t yet understand.

Over time, the effects of prolonged stress began to surface—fatigue, imbalance, and eventually an autoimmune diagnosis that forced me to pause and reconsider everything I thought I knew about health.

What I discovered changed the trajectory of my life.

I began to understand that the body is not fragile or broken. It is adaptive, intelligent, and constantly responding to its environment. Symptoms were not random failures. They were signals—evidence of deeper systems working hard to protect and preserve balance under prolonged strain.

This realization shifted my focus completely.

Instead of chasing symptoms or forcing solutions, I began studying the underlying systems that influence energy, metabolism, brain function, hormones, and long-term vitality. As I supported those systems using natural, sustainable approaches, my body began to restore balance in ways I had not thought possible.

That experience became the foundation of my work.

For more than two decades, I have helped others understand their bodies through this same systems-based lens—helping them move from frustration and confusion to clarity and confidence in their wellness journey.

My work is not about quick fixes or temporary solutions. It is about helping you understand what your body has been communicating, so you can support it in restoring balance naturally and sustainably.

When you understand the deeper patterns, everything begins to make more sense.

And from that place of understanding, true healing becomes possible.
