
If the label says Lavender, it's lavender.
If it says Frankincense, it's frankincense.
If two bottles have the same plant name on the front, what's left to know?
Quite a lot, actually.
I've worked with essential oils for more than two decades, and one of the things I've learned is that the name on the bottle tells you surprisingly little about the journey that created what's inside it.
Because an essential oil doesn't begin in a bottle.
It begins with a plant.
And that changes everything.
The Plant Is Making Chemistry
We tend to think of an essential oil as something humans manufacture from a plant.
But the plant did the interesting part first.
Aromatic plants manufacture complex mixtures of volatile compounds as part of their own biology. Those compounds can play roles in communication, attracting pollinators, responding to environmental stress, interacting with insects and microorganisms, and helping the plant navigate the world in which it grows.
When we distill an aromatic plant, we're capturing some of that chemistry.
Which means the first question isn't simply:
What kind of plant is this?
It's also:
What happened to this plant before it ever reached the distillery?
Same Name. Different Plant Story.
Take two plants of the same species and grow them under different conditions.
Different soil.
Different altitude.
Different rainfall.
Different temperatures.
Different amounts of sunlight.
Harvest them at different stages of maturity—or even at different times of day.
Their chemistry may not be identical.
That's not marketing. That's plant science.
Researchers have documented that essential-oil composition can be influenced by genetics, geography, climate, growing conditions, developmental stage, plant part and harvest timing.
In other words, the plant isn't a little factory following a standardized recipe.
It's alive.
It responds to its environment.
And the chemistry reflects that.
Then We Harvest It
Now imagine we've grown exactly the plant we want.
We're still nowhere near the bottle.
When should it be harvested?
Morning? Afternoon?
Before flowering? During flowering? After?
What part of the plant should be collected?
Should the material be distilled immediately, allowed to rest or partially dried first?
There isn't one answer that applies to every aromatic plant.
Research has even demonstrated measurable differences in essential-oil composition based on harvest time and distillation duration.
That fascinates me.
Because suddenly "harvesting lavender" isn't merely cutting lavender.
Timing becomes part of the chemistry.
And Then Comes Distillation
This is the part most consumers never see.
Plant material goes into a distillation chamber, steam moves through it, volatile compounds travel with that steam, and then the vapor is cooled and condensed.
It sounds simple.
It isn't.
Distillation time matters.
Temperature matters.
Pressure matters.
The condition and moisture content of the plant material can matter.
And different compounds don't necessarily emerge from the plant at precisely the same rate.
Research examining distillation time has found that changing how long plant material is distilled can change not only how much essential oil is recovered, but the relative concentrations of compounds within that oil.
Think about what that means.
The goal could be:
Get as much oil out of this plant as efficiently as possible.
Or the goal could be:
Produce a particular chemical profile.
Those aren't necessarily the same objective.
And that is where essential-oil quality becomes much more interesting than a pretty field and a bottle with a botanical name printed on it.
What About Testing?
Testing matters enormously.
Gas chromatography and mass spectrometry—usually shortened to GC and GC-MS—allow scientists to examine the chemical constituents of an essential oil.
That's incredibly useful.
But I've always believed there's another question worth asking:
Are we only testing the finished bottle, or do we understand the process that created it?
Testing can tell us a great deal about what arrived at the end.
Growing, harvesting and distillation practices help explain how it got there.
For me, those belong in the same conversation.
This Is Why I've Always Cared About the Farm
After more than 24 years around essential oils, I've become less impressed by what someone says about a bottle and more interested in what happened before there was a bottle.
Show me the plant.
Show me where it grew.
Tell me when it was harvested.
Show me the distillery.
Tell me why those distillation parameters were chosen.
Show me the testing.
Tell me what specifications you're trying to achieve—and what happens when an oil doesn't meet them.
Those questions tell me far more than the words 100% pure ever could.
Because "pure" answers only one kind of question.
It doesn't tell me the whole story of the chemistry.
So Are Two Bottles of Lavender the Same?
They may both legitimately contain lavender essential oil.
That doesn't mean their chemical profiles will be identical.
The same is true for peppermint, frankincense and other essential oils.
And this is one reason I've never been particularly interested in reducing the essential-oil conversation to:
"Which oil do I use for _____?"
There's a much more interesting conversation underneath that.
What plant are we talking about?
What chemistry did that plant produce?
What influenced that chemistry?
What did we do with the plant after harvest?
How was the oil distilled?
And what did we ultimately capture in that little bottle?
Those are the questions I've spent more than two decades asking.
And after all these years, I find them more fascinating—not less.
So the next time you pick up a bottle of essential oil, take another look at the name on the label.
Then remember:
That's the name of the plant.
It's not the whole story of the oil.
And perhaps the better question isn't simply, "What oil should I use?"
It's:
"What had to happen for this particular oil to become what it is?"
That's a conversation we're going to keep having.
