Hidden Conversations Inside the Body
Helping you understand what your body has been trying to tell you.
Have you ever noticed that the word "detox" seems to be everywhere these days?
Detox teas.
Detox cleanses.
Detox drinks.
Detox supplements.

The wellness industry often makes it sound like detox is something we do for a few days after we've "been bad."
But that's not how your body was designed.

Your body is designed to detoxify 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Every day, your liver's natural detoxification system processes hormones after they've done their job, medications, environmental chemicals, and the normal waste products created by your own metabolism.

The goal isn't to make your body detox.

The goal is to support the incredible detoxification system your body already has.

How Your Liver's Natural Detoxification System Works

Think of your liver as a sophisticated recycling center.
It doesn't simply "remove toxins."

Instead, it processes them through a series of carefully coordinated steps.
If you've ever heard Howard Cohn talk about detoxification, you've probably heard him explain that detox is a pathway—not a single event.

Those pathways are commonly referred to as Phase I, Phase II, and Phase III detoxification.

Phase I: Preparing Compounds for Elimination

During Phase I, the liver identifies substances that need to be processed.

These may include:
  • Environmental chemicals
  • Medications
  • Hormones the body no longer needs
  • Normal metabolic waste
Interestingly, this first phase can temporarily create compounds that are more reactive than they were before.

That isn't a problem...
...as long as the body is prepared for the next step.

Phase II: Making Compounds Safer

Phase II is where the magic happens.

The liver combines those reactive compounds with nutrients produced or supplied by the body, making them safer and easier to eliminate.
One of the body's most important helpers during this process is glutathione.
Often called the body's master antioxidant, glutathione helps protect cells while supporting normal detoxification pathways.

I like to picture glutathione as the protective packaging material at our recycling center.
Without enough packaging, it's much harder to move everything safely through the system.

Phase III: Eliminating Waste

Once compounds have been processed, they still have to leave the body.

That happens through:
  • Bile
  • Stool
  • Urine
  • Other natural elimination pathways
If those pathways become sluggish, the job isn't finished.
Detoxification isn't complete until the body successfully eliminates what it no longer needs.

Why Glutathione Is So Important

One of the biggest misconceptions I hear is that taking glutathione alone is the answer.

In reality, your body is constantly making, using, and recycling glutathione.
To do that, it needs the proper nutritional building blocks.

One of those building blocks is the sulfur-containing amino acid cysteine.

Sulfur plays an important role in the body's normal production of glutathione, which is one reason Gary Young frequently emphasized the importance of sulfur nutrition throughout his career.

A Real-Life Example: Why This Matters

Let's use something almost everyone has taken at some point: acetaminophen (Tylenol®).

Most people assume that because it's available over the counter, it must be completely harmless.
The reality is a little more nuanced.

When taken as directed, acetaminophen is generally safe for most healthy adults. But your liver still has to process it.

Most of the medication is broken down through the liver's normal detoxification pathways and eliminated without a problem.

However, a small portion is converted into a highly reactive compound. Under normal circumstances, your body quickly neutralizes that compound using glutathione, allowing it to be safely eliminated.
That's one reason glutathione is so important.

If glutathione stores become severely depleted—such as in an overdose or certain medical situations—that reactive compound can build up and damage liver cells. In fact, acetaminophen overdose is one of the leading causes of acute liver failure in the United States.

The point isn't to make anyone afraid of taking an occasional pain reliever.
The point is this:

Even common, everyday substances rely on your body's natural detoxification pathways to be processed safely.

Your liver is working for you every single day, whether you realize it or not.

And that's exactly why I believe it's worth supporting those pathways with good nutrition, healthy lifestyle habits, and products that nourish the body's normal physiology rather than chasing quick detox fixes.

How I Support My Liver's Natural Detoxification Pathways

Over the years, I've come to appreciate that supporting detoxification isn't about finding one miracle product.
It's about giving the body what it needs to function well.

Here are three products that have become part of my own daily wellness routine.

Balance & Burn

Howard Cohn has often reminded us that detoxification isn't about forcing toxins out of the body.
It's about supporting the body's normal physiology.

That's one reason Balance & Burn has become one of my foundational supplements.

Rather than focusing on a quick cleanse, it was designed to support healthy metabolism, antioxidant defenses, balanced inflammation, cellular energy, and the liver's normal detoxification pathways.

I don't think of it as a detox product.
I think of it as daily nutritional support.

LiverTone

The liver does an extraordinary amount of work every day, and some nutrients can help provide the raw materials it needs to do that work well.
That’s why LiverTone has become part of my routine.

It combines ingredients such as artichoke leaf and milk thistle with broccoli seed extract, citrus essential oils, and N-acetyl cysteine (NAC).

NAC particularly interests me because it provides cysteine needed to produce glutathione — one of the body’s most important antioxidant and detoxification molecules.

Rather than thinking of LiverTone as something that “detoxes” my liver, I think of it as nutritional support for the liver and the pathways it already uses every day.

NingXia Red

NingXia Red has been part of my daily wellness routine for many years — and not because I think of it simply as an antioxidant drink.

Our cells are constantly producing reactive oxygen species as part of normal metabolism. The body has its own antioxidant defense systems to keep that oxidative activity in balance.
One of those defenses is superoxide dismutase (SOD), an antioxidant enzyme that helps neutralize superoxide radicals before they can contribute to further oxidative stress.

That matters to liver health because the liver is an incredibly metabolically active organ, and many of its normal detoxification processes involve oxidative reactions.

NingXia Red provides a variety of plant compounds and antioxidants that I use as part of my overall strategy for supporting cellular resilience and the body’s natural antioxidant defenses.

For me, it’s another example of supporting the body’s chemistry rather than trying to force it to “cleanse.”

Sulfurzyme

Gary Young often referred to sulfur as one of the body's most important nutrients.

Sulfur participates in many normal biochemical processes, including supporting the body's production of glutathione.

That's why Sulfurzyme has remained part of my routine for many years.
It's one of those foundational nutrients that quietly supports the body's everyday work.

Inner Beauty Collagen

Most people think collagen is only about skin.
I certainly did years ago.

Today, I think of it much differently.

As many of you know, I've been sharing my own journey with hip pain and supporting healthier tendons and ligaments.
That experience reminded me that our bodies are constantly repairing and rebuilding. Inner Beauty Collagen provides amino acids that support healthy connective tissue while complementing the body's normal repair processes. It has become another daily staple in my wellness routine.

People sometimes ask me if they need to "clean out" their liver.
I always smile.

Your liver isn't a dirty coffee filter that needs to be flushed. It's a living organ that's working for you every minute of every day.

Instead of trying to force detoxification, I prefer to nourish the body so it can continue doing what it was beautifully designed to do.

Don't Forget the Basics

No supplement replaces healthy daily habits.

I also make it a priority to:
  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Eat adequate protein.
  • Move my body every day.
  • Support healthy elimination.
  • Prioritize quality sleep.
  • Reduce unnecessary chemical exposures whenever possible.
These simple habits help create the environment where everything else works better.

Your Body's Antioxidants Work as a Team

When most people think about antioxidants, they think of taking one vitamin or one supplement. But your body doesn't rely on just one antioxidant—it relies on an entire network working together.

One of the first responders is an enzyme called superoxide dismutase (SOD). Its job is to neutralize highly reactive free radicals before they can damage healthy cells. From there, other antioxidants—including catalase and glutathione—continue the process, helping protect your cells and maintain a healthy balance.

Think of it like a relay race.
Each runner has a specific job, and the handoff is just as important as the first step. If one part of the system is struggling, the others have to work harder.

That's one of the reasons NingXia Red has been part of my daily wellness routine for so many years. Rather than focusing on a single antioxidant, it provides a rich blend of wolfberries and other nutrient-dense fruits that help nourish your body's natural antioxidant defenses.

When you combine that with Balance & Burn, which supports healthy metabolism and the liver's normal detoxification pathways, and Sulfurzyme, which provides sulfur—an important building block for glutathione production—you begin supporting multiple parts of the same beautifully designed system.

Your body was created to protect and repair itself. Our goal isn't to replace that system—it's to give it the nutritional support it needs to do its job well.
