Your starting point: recovery

Rest isn’t the same as recovery.

“Even when I have time to rest, I can’t fully switch off.” If that sounds familiar, your body may be asking for this first.

Why start here

Your body is waiting for permission to stop.

Your nervous system has an accelerator and a brake. Stress presses the accelerator, and that’s useful for a while. But when it stays pressed for weeks or years, the brake gets rusty. You can lie down, take a day off, and still feel wired underneath.

That signal often spreads. Sleep gets lighter, digestion gets touchy, energy fades, and small things feel bigger. These aren’t separate problems. They often trace back to a body that hasn’t gotten the message it’s safe to stop.

The good news is that the brake can be trained, and your breath is one of the most direct ways to reach it.

The 7-Day Daily Downshift Experiment

Five minutes of slow breathing, at the same time each day, with a longer exhale than inhale. No equipment, no app, no purchase. Just seven days of showing your body what “off” feels like.

1

Same time each day

Anchor it to something you already do: after coffee, at lunch, or before bed.

2

Longer exhale

Breathe in through your nose for about 4, then out slowly for about 6. That’s roughly six breaths a minute.

3

Five minutes

Set a timer. When your mind wanders, come back to the exhale.

Each day

What to notice this week

  • ☐How your shoulders, jaw, and breathing feel right after
  • ☐Whether falling asleep or staying asleep shifts
  • ☐Digestion, especially after meals
  • ☐How quickly you bounce back from small stressors

You’re looking for patterns, not perfection.

Make it work for you

Keep breathing comfortable. If you feel lightheaded, go back to normal breathing; shorter counts (3 in, 4 out) work just as well. If you live with a heart or lung condition or are pregnant, keep it gentle and follow your provider’s guidance. If focusing on your breath makes you uneasy, keep your eyes open and rest your attention on your feet or a sound in the room. Never practice while driving. Short on time? Two minutes still counts.
